When God Expands the Circle

Weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.” ~ Psalm 30:5

Some seasons of life arrive with both joy and sorrow woven tightly together. We celebrate what God is doing while grieving what we are losing. Such is the heart of a parent or grandparent who watches loved ones follow God’s call to a new place.

As my children and grandchildren drove away to Missouri to plant a church, my heart experienced both emotions at once. I am excited for the ministry God has set before them, yet deeply saddened by the empty spaces their absence leaves behind. No spontaneous visits, no daily hugs, no little voices filling the house. Even the thought of attending church without them nearby feels unfamiliar and painful.

Yesterday, the tears would not come. Today, they came like a flood. The emotions I thought were hidden beneath the surface suddenly overflowed. Yet in those tears, God reminded me that grief is not weakness. Tears are often evidence of deep love. They are one of the languages of the heart, and our Heavenly Father understands every word.

My thoughts turn to Hannah. She prayed earnestly for a son and then faithfully surrendered Samuel back to the Lord’s service. What joy she must have felt knowing he belonged to God, and what heartache she must have endured as she left him at the tabernacle. Yet Hannah trusted that God’s purposes were greater than her own desires. Her sacrifice became part of God’s unfolding plan.

As parents, we are called to train our children in the ways of the Lord (Proverbs 22:6). When they grow and follow His leading, sometimes that training requires us to release them into God’s hands once again. The season of serving together may change, but the privilege of praying for them never ends.

Though my faith is being stretched farther than I expected, I can trust the same God who led them there. The miles may separate us, but they cannot separate us from God’s care, nor can they diminish the love that binds our family together. The Lord who called them will sustain them, protect them, and bless the work He has entrusted to them.

Today may be filled with tears, but tomorrow will bring fresh grace. God will teach me how to love from a distance, how to encourage from afar, and how to rejoice in what He is doing through the lives of those I cherish most.

Until then, I will pray, trust, and worship—confident that God’s plans are always good, even when they stretch the heart. ❤️

A Call to Respond

Have you ever found yourself celebrating God’s will while grieving the changes it brought into your life? Perhaps a child moved away, a grandchild grew up, a ministry season ended, or God opened a new door that required letting go of something precious.

Today, bring those emotions honestly before the Lord. He understands every tear, every ache, and every uncertainty. Thank Him for the blessings of the past season, and ask Him for grace to embrace the season He has placed before you now.

Instead of focusing on what has changed, choose to trust the God who never changes. Pray for those you love, encourage them in their calling, and rest in the confidence that the Lord’s plans are always best.
