🎶Sound the Battle Cry 🎶
This week I’d like to take a moment to express my gratitude to those who have served in our American military forces and to remember those who have sacrificed their lives for our freedom. Thank you!
This song encourages the believer to put on the whole armour of God, to be strong, and fight the good fight.
Author: William Fisk Sherwin (1826-1888)
Scripture:
Ephesians 6:11 Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
Hymn History:
William F Sherwin was born on March 14, 1826 in Buckland, Massachusetts. He excelled in his limited education and became a vocal music teacher. He was involved in Sunday Schools and composed carols and hymn-tunes, contributing to popular hymn books. Some of his melodies are known in Great Britain through I.D. Sankey’s Sacred Songs and Solos.
Lyrics:
Sound the battle cry!
See, the foe is nigh;
Raise the standard high
For the Lord;
Gird your armor on,
Stand firm, every one;
Rest your cause upon
His holy Word.
Refrain:
Rouse, then, soldiers, rally round the banner,
Ready, steady, pass the word along;
Onward, forward, shout aloud, Hosanna!
Christ is Captain of the mighty throng.
