Hymn History:

Palmer Hatrsough was born in Michigan on May 7, 1844 to Wells and Thankful Palmer Hartsough. Palmer Hartsough was a dedicated musician who pursued music education at Kalamazoo College and Michigan State Normal, teaching singing in rural areas and traveling to six states.

Palmer Hartsough became a renowned author, editor, lyricist, and librettist who worked as a traveling singing teacher and music director. He joined the Fillmore Music Company in Cincinnati and served as music director at Bethel Mission and 9th Street Baptist Church. He was ordained a Baptist minister in 1906 and lived in Plymouth, MI.

Hatrsough composed this hymn as a tribute to Francis Edward Clark, who founded the Christian Endeavor movement —an interdenominational group that offered guidelines for leading a Christian life and serving the local church. As Ohio’s official delegation song, James Henry Fillmore started writing the tune for the song prior to the 1896 World Endeavor Convention. The hymn was first performed at the convention and later published in the “Praise Hymnal”, a Fillmore collection.
