Since Jesus Came Into My Heart

🎵Since Jesus Came Into My Heart🎵

Rufus McDaniel’s son’s death inspired him to write a song about hope in Jesus, which became an instant classic and joyful gospel song.

2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

Author: Rufus Henry McDaniel (1850–1940)

Music: Charles Gabriel (1856-1932)

Hymn History:

In 1873, Rufus H. McDaniel received his Christian ordination. Church music brought him a lot of happiness. The 1880s saw him start writing hymns.

Following the untimely death of his youngest son Herschel in 1913, he wrote this song in 1914. He honored his son’s memory by writing the text of this joyful and uplifting gospel hymn (Cottrill, 2010).

He wrote, “I feel in my soul that God has something for me to do in brightening the experience of struggling souls. My chief desire is to be a blessing, if possible, to my fellow-men through these hymns and thereby glorify God in the name of his dear son ‘whose I am and whom I serve.'”

Lyrics:

1 What a wonderful change in my life has been wrought

Since Jesus came into my heart!

I have light in my soul for which long I have sought,

Since Jesus came into my heart!

Refrain:

Since Jesus came into my heart,

Since Jesus came into my heart,

Floods of joy o’er my soul like the sea billows roll,

Since Jesus came into my heart.

2 I have ceased from my wand’ring and going astray,

Since Jesus came into my heart!

And my sins which were many are all washed away,

Since Jesus came into my heart! [Refrain]

3 I’m possessed of a hope that is steadfast and sure,

Since Jesus came into my heart!

And no dark clouds of doubt now my pathway obscure,

Since Jesus came into my heart! [Refrain]

4 There’s a light in the valley of death now for me,

Since Jesus came into my heart!

And the gates of the City beyond I can see,

Since Jesus came into my heart! [Refrain]

5 I shall go there to dwell in that city, I know,

Since Jesus came into my heart!

And I’m happy, so happy, as onward I go,

Since Jesus came into my heart! [Refrain]
