Priscilla J. Owens was born on July 21, 1829, of Scotch and Welsh descent. She lived in Baltimore all of her life.
Priscilla Owens attended the Ladies’ Collegiate Institute in Baltimore and the Patapsco Institute in Howard County, Maryland. She spent 49 years teaching in public schools and even longer in Union Square Methodist Episcopal Church’s Sunday School.
She wrote poetry and prose on a variety of topics, including Civil War ballads, religious verses, hymns, and Sunday school songs. Some of her work was published in the Methodist Protestant, the Christian Standard, and Baltimore newspapers (Perine, 1898).
Fourteen years later, William Kirkpatrick combined her words with his bright music. And over the years, they have challenged God’s people to prioritize soul winning.
Priscilla J. Owens wrote these stirring soul-winning words for a missionary service in the Sunday school of the Union Square Methodist Church.
