It’s Saturday! Let’s put a song in our hearts
Victory in Jesus
Author: Eugene Monroe Bartlett, Sr. (1883-1941)
1 Corinthians 15:57 But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
History:
Eugene Bartlett, a Missouri-born author and composer, was a sought-after music teacher and established the Hartford Music Co. in 1918. He conducted singing schools across Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Alabama, and Tennessee, and edited the monthly music magazine Herald of Song. He is considered one of the founding fathers of Southern Gospel Music.
In 1917, Eugene M. Bartlett, Sr. met and got married to Joan Tatum. They had two sons, Gene Bartlett, Jr., a nationally known writer of contemporary church music and Charles Bartlett, a Minister of Music in a large Texas church.
Bartlett’s hymn, “Victory in Jesus,” was inspired by a sermon on 1 Corinthians 15:57, which emphasizes that Christians’ victory over sin and death comes through Christ’s sacrifice, not through their own efforts.
“Victory in Jesus” is a cherished hymn that has touched the hearts of millions since its inception. Written by Eugene M. Bartlett in 1939, during a challenging time in his life following a debilitating stroke, the song celebrates personal salvation and the joy found in faith. Despite his physical limitations, Bartlett remained dedicated to his Christian studies, channeling his insights into this uplifting piece just before the onset of World War II. The hymn was first published in “Gospel Choruses” and has since been embraced by evangelical communities and gospel quartets. Bartlett’s legacy continues through over 800 songs, with “Victory in Jesus” standing out as a testament to his enduring faith and creativity.
Lyrics:
I heard an old, old story,
How a Savior came from glory,
How He gave His life on Calvary
To save a wretch like me;
I heard about His groaning,
Then I repented of my sins;
And won the victory.
Refrain:
O victory in Jesus,
My Savior, forever.
He sought me and bought me
With His redeeming blood;
He loved me ere I knew Him,
And all my love is due Him,
He plunged me to victory,
Beneath the cleansing flood
I heard about His healing,
Of His cleansing power revealing.
How He made the lame to walk again
And caused the blind to see;
And then I cried, “Dear Jesus,
Come and heal my broken spirit,”
And somehow Jesus came and brought
To me the victory.
Refrain
I heard about a mansion
He has built for me in glory.
And I heard about the streets of gold
Beyond the crystal sea;
About the angels singing,
And the old redemption story,
And some sweet day I’ll sing up there
The song of victory.
Refrain
