Spiritual Disciplines – Service

Welcome!  In our journey of faith, it is essential to focus on spiritual disciplines that will help us grow in our relationship with God. This year, we are intentionally looking at practices that go beyond mere habits and rituals, but rather sacred rhythms that create space for God to work miraculously in our lives.

Memory Verse Challenge:

“23 And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; 24 Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ.”  Colossians 3:23-24

When was the last time you served the Lord with a truly grateful heart? Recently, we reflected on how doing good in His name is an act of worship—serving others to honor God. Every small act of kindness, every moment spent helping someone, brings joy to His heart. Just as we’re called to live with an attitude of worship, we’re also called to live with the heart of a servant.

Each day, let’s ask ourselves: How can I serve God today? How can I be a blessing to someone else? Let that question shape your actions and your attitude.

Spiritual Disciplines – Service

Service is not just a Christian duty—it’s a spiritual discipline that shapes us into the image of Christ. True service flows from a heart devoted to God, not from a desire for recognition or praise. It is one of the clearest ways we reflect the love of Christ to the world.

In the Bible, service is the act of humbly and faithfully ministering to the needs of others out of love for God and obedience to His Word, often at personal cost and without seeking recognition. It is rooted in selflessness, humility, and love, and is ultimately an act of worship to God.

We serve others not to bring attention to ourselves, but to bring glory to God’s name.

Selfish hearts resist serving because they’re too focused on themselves to give to others. True service requires selflessness—a willingness to give without expecting anything in return. When we serve, we must set aside our own agendas and fix our attention on God and those He’s called us to love.

We serve others out of our love for God—not to gain recognition, impress others, or try to earn His favor. We serve because He already loves us, and He’s called us to share that love with the world. The spiritual discipline of service allows us to be vessels of His love and light, reaching those who need it most.

Why is Serving important?

Serving others is a powerful expression of humility—and it’s truly beautiful. It gives us the chance to discover and grow in our spiritual gifts and talents. As we serve, we get to witness God’s glory firsthand—seeing lives touched, needs met, and even miracles unfold.

Service builds meaningful connections, both with fellow believers and with those who don’t yet know Christ. When we serve non-believers with kindness, compassion, and generosity, we reflect the heart of Jesus. Your simple act of service may be the very thing that leads someone to Christ. God places us in specific moments and relationships for a reason—He’s using you to make a difference.

What an incredible honor it is that God chooses to work through us!

10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them. Ephesians 2:10

While we serve to bless others, we also receive something in return—joy. When we give from a heart full of love, we experience deep happiness and fulfillment. As the saying goes, “It’s better to give than to receive.” Regular service not only brings joy, but it also strengthens and matures our faith.

  1. Jesus: Our Perfect Example

Jesus, the Son of God, humbled Himself to serve others. He washed the feet of His disciples—a task reserved for the lowliest servant.

“For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.”  Mark 10:45

When we serve others, we walk in His footsteps. We become His hands and feet, reaching out with love, humility, and compassion.

Service can take many forms—from helping neighbors and volunteering to mentoring others. It shifts our focus from self to others and cultivates humility and love.

  1. Service Requires Humility

Genuine service doesn’t seek a platform. It often happens in quiet moments—doing dishes, caring for a neighbor, encouraging someone who’s struggling.

“Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.” – Philippians 2:3

Spiritual discipline teaches us to crucify selfish ambition and embrace humility. Service is a daily surrender of self for the sake of others.

  1. Serving in Love

True service is rooted in love, not obligation. We serve not to earn favor with God, but because we are compelled by His love working in us.

“For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another.” – Galatians 5:13

Every act of service—big or small—becomes an offering to God when done with a heart of love.

  1. The Rewards of Service

Though we may not always see immediate fruit, God sees every act of faithfulness.

23 And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; 24 Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ.” – Colossians 3:23-24

Our service is never in vain when it is unto the Lord. One day, we will hear the words, “Well done, thou good and faithful servant.”

Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for the example of Jesus, who came not to be served but to serve. Teach us to follow His example in humility and love. Help us to see the needs around us and respond with willing hearts. May our service bring glory to You and reflect Your grace to others. Strengthen us to serve faithfully, even when no one sees but You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Reflection Question:
How can you intentionally serve someone this week (or month) —not for recognition, but out of love and obedience to God?

I pray that you will continue to be conscious of God’s presence throughout the month as you journal His Word and that you will sense His presence in every area of your life.
