The Promises of God for October

Journaling Scripture Plan for October

HAPPY OCTOBER!

Fall is my favorite time of the year! I love the colors of the changing leaves. For many, it’s time for pumpkin spice, apple picking, pumpkin picking, football, and afternoons filled with baking and walking in the cooler weather. I enjoy baking with apple and pumpkin flavors.

Since I live in the south, we don’t often get to enjoy the changing of the leaves, but this year I’ve noticed it more. The colors of God’s creation changing before our eyes are magnificent!

We are journeying through the Bible this year to learn about God’s Promises. Over 270 of God’s Promises have been written if you started with us in January. We’ll learn about 30 more of God’s promises this month.

This month, we are examining a verse from John 16:13. Let’s examine this promise from God together.

Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. John 16:13

Jesus calls the Holy Spirit the “Spirit of truth” once again in this passage (John 14:16; 15:26). Prior to Christ’s resurrection, several facets of His earthly ministry were misinterpreted (John 2:22). Clarifying those occurrences was the role of the Holy Spirit, particularly in the lives of the apostles (1 Corinthians 2:10). The Holy Spirit imparts knowledge in the lives of all Christian believers that cannot be expected of those without His influence (1 Corinthians 2:14).

The Spirit’s influence on believers is not instant or automatic, but rather He guides, speaks, and declares. However, this influence can be resisted or ignored (Galatians 2:11-14).  Discipleship (Matthew 28:19-20) and the use of the written Word are crucial in doctrinal discussions (Acts 8:31).

He will lead you into all truth:

In one particular manner, the completion of the New Testament’s divinely inspired books marked the fulfillment of this promise. In another way, the Holy Spirit still personally guides us into truth today, but never in opposition of the Scripture, as the New Testament represents the fullness of God’s supremely authoritative revelation.

Jesus’ remarks in this passage also reflect on the interconnection of God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.

THE LEADERSHIP OF OUR GUIDE

“Truth is like a vast cavern into which we desire to enter, but we are not able to traverse it alone.

At the entrance it is clear and bright; but if we would go further and explore its innermost recesses, we must have a guide, or we shall lose ourselves. The Holy Spirit, who knows all truth perfectly, is the appointed guide of all true believers, and He conducts them as they are able to bear it, from one inner chamber to another, so that they behold the deep things of God, and His secret is made plain to them.

What a promise is this for the humbly inquiring mind!

We desire to know the truth and to enter into it. We are conscious of our own aptness to err, and we feel the urgent need of a guide. We rejoice that the Holy Spirit is come and abides among us. He condescends to act as a guide to us, and we gladly accept His leadership.

“All truth” we wish to learn, that we may not be one-sided and out of balance. We would not be willingly ignorant of any part of revelation lest thereby we should miss blessing or incur sin.

The Spirit of God has come that He may guide us into all truth: let us with obedient hearts hearken to His words and follow His lead.” – Charles Spurgeon Faith’s Checkbook.
