Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing

Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing

Psalms 16:11 Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.

Author: Robert Robinson (1735-1790)

A teenage Robert Robinson went to an evangelical conference in 1752 with the intention of making fun of the proceedings and heckling the believers. Instead, the great preacher George Whitefield’s teachings filled him with wonder. In 1755, at the age of twenty, Robinson answered the call he had felt three years before and became a Christian. Three more years later, he wrote the lyrics to one of the church’s most well-known hymns, “Come, thou fount of every blessing, tune my heart to sing thy grace,” while preparing a sermon for his church in Norfolk, England.

This hymn serves as a reminder of God’s abundant grace by using images of Christ as the source of living water and the shepherd bringing his sheep back into the flock.
