~ History ~

Chapman was born on June 17, 1859 in Richmond, IN. He attended a Quaker day school and Methodist Sunday School. Through the influence of D. L. Moody, Chapman accepted Christ as His Savior at the age of 17.

Chapman was a prominent evangelist and pastor who held six pastorates in various states. He was appointed Corresponding Secretary of the Presbyterian General Assembly’s Committeee on Evangelism in 1895 and developed campaign tactics to maximize evangelical successes.

Chapman and gospel singer Charles Alexander launched evangelical campaigns in 1907, resulting in 8000 conversions. They also held religious summer conferences and held large revivals with Alexander in 1912. Chapman was elected moderator of the Presbyterian Church General Assembly and died two days later due to gall stones. He was also a prolific writer of religious works and hymn lyrics.

~ Hymn ~

One day when Heaven was filled with His praises,

One day when sin was as black as could be,

Jesus came forth to be born of a virgin,

Dwelt among men, my example is He!

Refrain:

Living, He loved me; dying, He saved me;

Buried, He carried my sins far away;

Rising, He justified freely forever;

One day He’s coming—oh, glorious day!
