Hymn History – The Solid Rock

The Solid Rock

Scripture:

Psalms 18:2  The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower.

Author: Edward Mote (1797-1874)

Hymn History:

Edward Mote’s life serves as an example of the transforming power of God’s grace, from the disorderly streets of London to the pulpits of Baptist churches. Edward was born in 1797 into a family of pub owners and was raised in ignorance of the Bible and the benevolent presence of Christ. “So ignorant was I that I did not know there was a God,” he later recalls.

One momentous morning in 1834, as Mote was making his way to his workshop in Holborn, London, the thought of writing a hymn came to mind: “On Christ the solid Rock, I stand; All other ground is sinking sand.” He finished writing four verses of what would turn into one of the greatest hymns of all time by the end of the day.

Hymn Lyrics:

My hope is built on nothing less

than Jesus’ blood and righteousness;

I dare not trust the sweetest frame,

but wholly lean on Jesus’ name.

Chorus:

On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand:

all other ground is sinking sand;

all other ground is sinking sand.
