Rock of Ages

Woke with the hymn “Rock of Ages” on my mind.

Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God. 2 Corinthians 1:3-4

We are encouraged to boldly approach the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find help in time of need (Hebrews 4:16). The Lord is able to calm the raging mind and give peace to our troubled souls. He has the power to mend shattered hearts, heal the most agonizing wounds, and provide hope and joy among the deepest tragedies.

Our faith and trust in the Lord is never in vain. As we learn from our trials, it is our responsibility to help encourage others through fervent prayer, praise, and thanksgiving. Thus, our trials will have positive outcomes for us and others (Romans 8:28), if we allow them to.

May you have a blessed day 🌺

Because He lives,

Melissa Smith

Rock of Ages

Author: Augustus Top lady

There is a legend that Augustus Toplady was inspired to write this hymn after finding shelter from a thunderstorm in a cleft in a rock at Burrington Combe in Somerset, England in 1776. While evidence to support that story is lacking, it does provide a vivid image through which to understand the hymn. Christ and His redemptive work on the cross are like that cleft in the rock, where we can find shelter from the deluge of sin’s guilt and power.
