Hey Single Girl – Tara (Hall) Sharp

Hey Single Girl,

Don’t you just love love! You have been talking about boys and babies and homes forever, and you are just waiting for love to come your way.

How interesting that God commands us to love. Actually, love is the 1st and 2nd greatest commandment. Matt 22:37-39 talks about how loving God and loving others are the 1st and 2nd greatest commandments. Of all the commandments God gives us, to love is the most important. We cannot be obedient to God without love. It doesn’t matter our feelings or circumstances, it is simply a command we are to obey.

Gal 5:22 tells us the fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace … so love comes before joy, and all the other fruits. Perhaps the order God chose to write them in is significant … love brings joy, joy brings peace, etc, and it all starts with love. You cannot give joy or any of the other fruits without love.

Well where does that leave single girls??!!? We haven’t found love, we are still waiting for love. Wives and mothers have built in opportunities to love; obviously their husband and children, but also the community that comes with those. Single girls often do not have a community, or feel very awkward in theirs.

There is something deeply satisfying in sacrificial love, and it seems out of reach for single girls. As a single girl, you have to go find people to love. You have to be mindful to think of others. Our whole world is just us, there is no body else to care for. That is a self-centered, self-pleasing, selfish place to be. That is a very lonely place to be.

Single girl, go find people! Ask God to send you people to love. Learn to see those around you and really love them.
