Hymn History

A series of sermons on the possibility of Christ’s second coming were broadcast by pioneering radio pastor Reverend C. A. Blackmore sometime in 1934. In one he proclaimed, “Dear friend, all your suffering and pain will be over. You’ll have a new body. Arms and legs that are missing will be replaced. Friend, we’ll be like Jesus! You’ll have a glorified body some day, some golden daybreak when Jesus comes back.”  A few days later, a woman who had been bedridden for more than 20 years sent him a letter. She expressed her gratitude to him for his sermon and the promise of the “golden daybreak” of Christ’s second coming.

The pianist and soloist for the program, Pastor Blackmore’s son Carl, was another person who paid close attention to his uplifting message.  Carl Blackmore (1904–1964) was a talented servant of the Lord. He composed the lyrics and melody for a small chorus he named Some Golden Daybreak while reflecting on what the Bible refers to as “the blessed hope” of Christ’s second coming (Tit. 2:13). However, he felt that the song lacked verses, so he asked his father to contribute some for it. In response, the senior Blackmore said, “I’m not much of a poet, but with the Lord’s help I’ll give it a try.”

Later, unable to sleep, he woke up in the early hours of the morning. He started forming poetic lines in his head as he thought about the approaching return of Christ. His son provided the melody, and they were added to complete the gospel hymn.

___________

1. Some Glorious Morning Sorrow Will Cease,

Some Glorious Morning All Will Be Peace;

Heartaches All Ended, School days All Done,

Heaven Will Open, Jesus Will Come.

Some Golden Daybreak, Jesus Will Come;

Some Golden Daybreak, Battles All Won,

He’ll Shout The Victory, Break Through The Blue,

Some Golden Daybreak, For Me, For You.

2. Sad Hearts Will Gladden, All Shall Be Bright,

Goodbye Forever To Earth’s Dark Night;

Changed In A Moment, Like Him To Be,

Oh, Glorious Daybreak, Jesus I’ll See.

3. Oh, What A Meeting, There In The Skies,

No Tears Nor Crying Shall Dim Our Eyes;

Loved Ones United Eternally,

Oh, What A Daybreak That Morn Will Be.🎶
