Hymn History: Love Lifted Me

Text: James Rowe (1865-1933)

Melody: Howard E Smith (1863-1918)

Written: 1912

Scripture:

Matthew 14:22 And straightway Jesus constrained his disciples to get into a ship, and to go before him unto the other side, while he sent the multitudes away.

History:

Rowe and Smith’s hymn skillfully combines the parables found in Matthew 14:22–33 and Matthew 8:23–27, equating being submerged in the sea with sinking deeply in sin and rising no more. Jesus, the “Master of the Sea,” answers our cries for help, extends a loving hand toward us, and draws us up into the abundance of grace.
